Most EASM tools see your perimeter from the outside — domains, certs, subdomains, exposed ports, shadow assets. Useful, but they don't know what's behind the perimeter: which IAM role serves that endpoint, which database it can reach, whether that database holds PII. Cloudanix's EASM lives on top of the full asset graph — so the outside view becomes part of the same blast-radius math as everything else.
Enumeration ≠ exposure.
A standalone EASM tool can tell you "there's a public-facing host on 203.0.113.55." Cloudanix can tell you "that host is a bastion attached to a role that can reach the production PII database." Different sentence. Different conversation in the incident channel.
Pure-external EASM is half the story
Standalone EASM tools enumerate external assets brilliantly. They can't tell you which of those assets has a path to your crown jewels — because they don't have access to the internal graph.
Pure-internal CSPM misses the perimeter
Most CSPMs focus on configuration of resources they're told about. The lambda function nobody documented, the legacy load balancer still running on a forgotten account — they only get noticed if the perimeter scanner finds them first.
Two tools = two pipelines = two stories
Running EASM and CSPM as separate products means the SOC stitches the story manually. The shadow-IT host the EASM found and the IAM role the CSPM flagged — same incident, two tickets, often resolved separately.

External discovery
Continuous discovery from outside-in — domains and subdomains (CT logs, passive DNS, brute), certificate transparency feeds, exposed ports (where authorized), TLS / HTTP fingerprinting, technology detection. Inputs from your seed domains plus inferred-related domains.
Internal inventory cross-reference
Every externally-discovered asset is matched (where possible) against the internal asset graph — load balancers, API Gateway endpoints, CDN distributions, EC2 public IPs, container exposures. The match tells you whether the external asset is owned, orphaned (likely yours, no owner), or unattributed (could be a typosquat, a vendor host, or rogue infra).
Reachability scoring
For matched external assets, the same graph that computes attack paths internally is used to compute "what does compromising this external surface let an attacker reach?" — the identity attached to the load balancer, the role the identity can assume, the data store the role can read.
Continuous monitoring & alerts
The external surface changes constantly — new certs, new subdomains, ports opening, hostnames being reused. Cloudanix surfaces changes as a feed: new asset discovered, ownership inferred, cert expiring, port newly opened. Alerts route through the standard incident workflow.

- A penetration-testing / red-team tool. We discover surface; we don't actively exploit it. (We pair well with red-team tools — discovery results feed the engagement.)
- A vulnerability scanner of internet-facing software at OWASP-Top-10 depth. We integrate with DAST tools rather than ship the scanner ourselves.
- A brand-protection / typosquat takedown service. Surface enumeration may surface typosquats, but actual takedown is a different product category.

Do we still need a standalone EASM tool if we have Cloudanix?
Depends on depth requirement. For most cloud-native organisations, Cloudanix's EASM capability is sufficient — external discovery joined to the internal graph covers the working set of "what's exposed and what does it reach?" For organisations that need EASM as a deep practice (pen-test-grade enumeration, large-scale brand-monitoring, telecom-scale ASN scanning), pure-EASM tools like Censys, Randori or Mandiant ASM go deeper than we do. Many customers run both — the pure-EASM tool feeds its discoveries into Cloudanix where the reachability scoring happens.
How is this different from CSPM?
CSPM evaluates configuration of resources the platform knows about (because you've connected the cloud account). EASM discovers from outside-in — which means it finds assets you didn't tell the platform about, including shadow IT, orphaned legacy infrastructure, and subdomains created by departments that don't sync with central IT. In Cloudanix the two are joined: a CSPM finding on a public ALB and an EASM finding on the same hostname converge as one story.
What discovery sources does Cloudanix use?
Standard EASM inputs: certificate transparency feeds (Crt.sh, Censys CT), passive DNS, brute / wordlist subdomain enumeration (within scope authorized by you), the cloud provider's own public-asset APIs (where they expose them), and integration with your DNS provider for authoritative records. The discovery scope is yours to configure — we only enumerate what your seeds and authorization permit.
Will discovery scans cause performance impact or alerting noise?
External discovery is passive — CT logs, passive DNS, public APIs — by default. Active scanning (port probes, TLS fingerprinting, brute subdomain enumeration) is opt-in per domain and rate-limited to avoid impact. Where active scanning runs, it's bounded enough not to trip your own IDS / NIDS, and customers commonly add Cloudanix's scanner ASN to their internal allowlists.
How do you handle orphaned / unowned external assets?
When an externally-discovered asset matches partially against the internal graph (e.g., points to an IP you own but no resource attribution exists), Cloudanix flags it as orphaned. These appear as their own work category — the security team can investigate, attribute owner via the standard tagging workflow, or decommission. Orphaned assets are often the highest-risk subset of the surface because nobody is patching them.
Can we export the attack-surface inventory to our existing tools?
Yes — full asset list and discovery deltas export to S3 / GCS / Azure Blob in JSON or CSV on a schedule. Webhook-on-change for real-time downstream pipelines. Standard ticket-system integrations (Jira, ServiceNow) for owner-assignment workflows.
