A Coding Agent
Firewall.
(Yes, that's a thing now.)

A Coding Agent Firewall sits between an AI coding agent (Claude Code, Cursor, Kiro, Copilot) and the cloud APIs it can call. It blocks the actions you never want an agent to take, gates risky writes on human approval, and turns every agent action into an identity-stamped audit log. Cloudanix builds one.

What is a Coding Agent Firewall?

"

A Coding Agent Firewall is a security control plane that sits between an AI coding agent (Claude Code, Cursor, Kiro, Copilot, Aider) and the production resources the agent can act on — cloud APIs, databases, SaaS endpoints. It evaluates each agent-initiated action against policy, blocks destructive or out-of-scope actions, gates risky writes on human approval, and produces an identity-stamped audit log tying every action back to the human operator behind the agent.

— Cloudanix, May 2026

Every Coding Agent Firewall does four things.

01

Block

Actions that should never happen — DropTable, DeleteDBInstance, prod-cluster terminations, secret retrieval from sensitive vaults — fail closed at the firewall, before they reach the cloud API.

02

Gate

Actions that might be OK — risky writes, large reads, schema migrations — pause for human-in-the-loop approval. Slack DM, Teams ping, web modal — whatever fits the team.

03

Scope

Allowed actions get short-lived, intent-scoped credentials brokered to the agent. The agent never holds long-lived keys; the session dies when the work is done.

04

Audit

Every action — passed, blocked, gated — produces an identity-stamped log line: which agent, which human operator behind it, which policy fired, which resource was touched.

Why this category exists in 2026 and didn't in 2024

"I asked Claude to clean up the test database
and it cleaned up the wrong one."

Three things changed in the last 18 months. Each one made the prior generation of security tools insufficient.

2024

Agents started calling cloud APIs directly

Before MCP, coding agents wrote code that humans then ran. After MCP, the agent is the runner — it shells out to the AWS CLI, the gcloud SDK, the database connection string. That shifted the blast radius from "review-the-PR" to "the action already happened."

2025

Approval prompts became theatre

Cursor and Claude Code both ship with "approve every action" toggles. Developers, fairly, hit "approve all" by Day 2. The model's "do you want to proceed?" prompt is not a security control — it's a UX hint. Real authorization had to move to the platform.

2026

Identity tooling started catching up

CIEM and IAM tooling assumed humans. Then service accounts. Now AI agents — which mint credentials, call APIs and die faster than any CIEM can rescan. The market needed something that brokered credentials at the moment of use, not just analyzed policies at rest.

What it isn't

A Coding Agent Firewall is not…

Not a prompt-injection scanner

Prompt scanners watch the conversation. They stop before the agent touches anything outside the chat. A Coding Agent Firewall starts there — it doesn't look at prompts, it looks at actions.

Not an LLM gateway

LLM gateways proxy model traffic — rate limits, token spend, content moderation. They don't see what the agent does after the LLM call, when it picks up the AWS SDK and starts making real API calls.

Not just CIEM with an agent column

CIEM analyzes permissions at rest. A Coding Agent Firewall intercepts the action at runtime. Both useful; entirely different controls.

Not the IDE's built-in approval prompt

"Approve every action?" prompts in Cursor or Claude Code are UX, not security. They cooperate with the developer; they don't enforce against them.

What Our Users Are Saying

Customer Reviews

Cloudanix is trusted by security leaders worldwide to deliver proactive, reliable, and cutting-edge cloud security.

One day, I changed the password of a root account, and my CTO called me within less than a minute to confirm if I did so. I was not expecting a reaction this quick. He told me Cloudanix alerted him of this password change and that he wanted to confirm as it was a critical security notification. I couldn't believe it!

Cloudanix gave us the visibility we were missing. Being able to move from permanent access to a robust Just-In-Time (JIT) workflow has fundamentally changed our security posture without slowing down our engineering velocity.

Managing third-party partner access was once a major concern for our security posture. With Cloudanix JIT Cloud, we've effectively achieved zero third-party risk. We can now grant access confidently, knowing that it is temporary, audited, and automatically revoked, resulting in a 100% reduction in our privileged access exposure.

Implementing Cloudanix JIT internally allowed us to practice what we preach. By eliminating permanent access to our own clouds and databases, we've neutralized the risk of standing privileges, ensuring our own 'keys to the kingdom' are never left exposed.

The problem with permissions is a lot of times, the gaps are left open due to oversights from inside the organization itself. With Cloudanix's CIEM, we get a complete view of user permissions and access. This enables us to update the permissions, reducing the attack surface.
