Cloudanix Joins AWS ISV Accelerate Program
Use case · privilege escalation detection

Catch privilege escalation when it is still a chain.
Not after it becomes admin.

Privilege escalation in cloud is often a sequence: attach a policy, assume a role, create a key, bind a cluster role, update a trust policy. Each step can look routine. Cloudanix detects the sequence and scores it by what the new privilege can reach.

The problem

Escalation usually arrives as multiple small changes.

If every IAM event is judged alone, the attack sequence gets lost.

01

IAM changes are noisy

Cloud teams change roles and policies constantly. Static rules that fire on every policy update are ignored quickly.

02

Escalation is multi-step

The dangerous moment is often not one API call. It is the combination of policy attachment, trust expansion, key creation and resource reach.

03

Blast radius is unclear

Admin-looking permissions matter most when they reach production, customer data, KMS keys, CI/CD runners or security tooling.

How it works

Turn IAM drift into a privilege-escalation story.

01

Baseline identities

Cloudanix learns normal actions for humans, service accounts, CI/CD roles and AI agents, including policy-change patterns and peer-group behaviour.

02

Detect risky sequences

Examples include attach-policy then assume-role, create-key after inactive period, trust-policy expansion, Kubernetes cluster-admin binding and new access to secrets or KMS.

03

Score by new reach

The graph calculates what the identity can reach after the change: data stores, production workloads, admin planes, CI/CD systems and crown-jewel assets.

04

Gate or revoke

High-risk changes can open an approval flow, expire the session, revoke the key, remove the binding or create an owner-assigned ticket with the chain attached.

Why Cloudanix

What changes when this use case runs on one graph.

Sequence-aware, not rule-only

Cloudanix tracks the chain of actions rather than firing a standalone alert for every policy edit.

Blast radius built in

The same IAM change is scored differently depending on whether it reaches sandbox logs or customer data.

Covers human and non-human identities

Escalation paths are modeled for engineers, service accounts, CI/CD roles, Kubernetes service accounts and AI coding agents.

What Our Users Are Saying

Customer Reviews

Cloudanix is trusted by security leaders worldwide to deliver proactive, reliable, and cutting-edge cloud security.

One day, I changed the password of a root account, and my CTO called me within less than a minute to confirm if I did so. I was not expecting a reaction this quick. He told me Cloudanix alerted him of this password change and that he wanted to confirm as it was a critical security notification. I couldn't believe it!

Managing third-party partner access was once a major concern for our security posture. With Cloudanix JIT Cloud, we've effectively achieved zero third-party risk. We can now grant access confidently, knowing that it is temporary, audited, and automatically revoked, resulting in a 100% reduction in our privileged access exposure.

Implementing Cloudanix JIT internally allowed us to practice what we preach. By eliminating permanent access to our own clouds and databases, we've neutralized the risk of standing privileges, ensuring our own 'keys to the kingdom' are never left exposed.

The problem with permissions is a lot of times, the gaps are left open due to oversights from inside the organization itself. With Cloudanix's CIEM, we get a complete view of user permissions and access. This enables us to update the permissions, reducing the attack surface.

Common questions

Asked plainly.

What is cloud privilege escalation?

Cloud privilege escalation is when an identity gains broader access than intended, often through IAM policy changes, trust-policy changes, role assumptions, key creation, Kubernetes RBAC changes or abusing service-account permissions.

How does Cloudanix avoid alerting on normal IAM work?

Cloudanix combines per-identity baselines, peer-group behaviour and graph scoring. A routine policy update by the platform team against a low-risk sandbox is treated differently from a first-time policy attachment by a dormant service account that reaches production data.

Does this cover Kubernetes privilege escalation?

Yes. Examples include new cluster-admin bindings, privileged pods, hostPath mounts, service-account token abuse, namespace escape paths and workloads that can reach cloud credentials.

Can Cloudanix block privilege escalation?

Yes, for workflows governed by Cloudanix JIT or policy automation. High-risk changes can be gated for approval, while active sessions, keys and grants can be revoked where configured.

How does this relate to CIEM?

CIEM shows who has excessive privilege. Privilege-escalation detection shows when an identity appears to be gaining new privilege or using a path toward higher privilege. Cloudanix does both in the same graph.

Can this detect AI-agent privilege escalation?

Yes. Agent actions brokered through Cloudanix are identity-stamped to the human operator and evaluated against policy, baseline and graph reach. Risky escalation attempts can be gated or blocked.
