Cloudanix vs
Microsoft Defender for Cloud.
Strong in Azure. Asymmetric outside it.

Defender for Cloud, Defender for Servers, Defender for Containers, Defender for SQL, Defender for Storage, Sentinel, Entra — Microsoft ships one of the most complete native security portfolios in the industry inside Azure. This page is for buyers who run beyond Azure (multi-cloud, AWS-heavy, hybrid), who ship AI coding agents to production, who need real JIT brokering beyond Entra PIM, who need Database JIT & DAM, or whose compliance reality includes regulators Microsoft's catalog doesn't go deep on.

The 30-second version

If you only read one section.

Stay on Defender when
  • You're Azure-deep with limited or no presence on AWS / GCP, and the Microsoft consolidation story (Defender + Sentinel + Entra + Purview + M365) pays back.
  • You're already on E5 / Microsoft 365 E5 Security and want to maximise utilisation of what you're already paying for.
  • Compliance scope is bounded to the Microsoft-shipped frameworks (SOC 2, ISO, NIST, FedRAMP, plus the Azure-curated industry standards).
  • Your identity story is fully Entra-managed and Entra PIM's role-based just-in-time-elevation flow meets your JIT needs.
  • You're not yet running AI coding agents (Claude, Cursor, Kiro) against production.
Add Cloudanix when
  • You're multi-cloud — AWS / GCP / OCI alongside Azure — and you want one console with parity across all three, not Azure-deep and AWS/GCP shallow.
  • You want a JIT broker (not role-elevation) for humans, service accounts, CI/CD principals, and AI coding agents.
  • You're shipping AI coding agents and need an MCP-native broker and action firewall.
  • You want Database JIT and DAM as native — not Defender-for-SQL's monitor-only posture.
  • Your compliance includes DPDPA, RBI, IRDAI, SEBI, SAMA, PDPL, DORA, NIS2.
  • You want Code Security in the platform price — not GHAS as a separate SKU.
  • You prefer a security vendor independent of any one hyperscaler.
Credit where it's due

Where Defender for Cloud is genuinely strong.

Microsoft built one of the most complete native security portfolios in the industry. Inside Azure, it's the bar.

🔵

Azure-deep first-party integration

Defender for Servers / Containers / SQL / Storage / App Service / Key Vault all sit on top of Azure's own control and data planes. The depth of telemetry and policy attachment they get is something no third-party can match natively inside Azure.

📊

Sentinel + Defender XDR pipeline

If you're already running Sentinel as your SIEM, the Defender → Sentinel pipeline is genuinely tight — pre-built rules, deeplinks, fusion incidents. Strong consolidation for Microsoft-shop SOCs.

🆔

Entra identity foundation

Microsoft Entra (formerly Azure AD) is the dominant enterprise IdP. Conditional Access, PIM role elevation, Entra ID Governance — for a Microsoft-shop, the identity story is broad and mature.

Now the gap

What Defender for Cloud doesn't ship.

01

True multi-cloud parity

Defender supports AWS and GCP — but the support is Azure-first by design. Coverage parity, time-to-ship-feature parity, and policy-language parity all lag. Cloudanix treats AWS, Azure, GCP as equals — same product, same console, same graph.

02

JIT brokering (not just PIM role elevation)

Entra PIM elevates a user into a pre-defined role for a window. That's role-based JIT, not request-level brokering. Cloudanix brokers credentials per-action: "this agent, for this resource, for this 15-minute window," with the scope tailored to the intent — and works for non-Entra identities (service accounts, AI agents).

03

MCP-native Agentic security

Claude Code, Cursor, Kiro, Codex — all speak MCP. Microsoft has no MCP-broker product today. Cloudanix exposes itself as an MCP server, brokers ephemeral credentials, gates and blocks risky actions, identity-stamps the audit trail.

04

Database JIT & live DAM

Defender for SQL monitors and surfaces threats — useful, but it's monitor-only, not access-broker. Cloudanix Database JIT mints short-lived database credentials with optional masking; DAM gives you live query observability with anomaly detection. The combination is closer to what data-first security programs need.

05

Code Security included, not SKU-gated

SAST, secrets, IaC, container image scanning. With Microsoft, the equivalent (GitHub Advanced Security) is a separate SKU layered on top — useful, but a separate procurement and a separate console. Cloudanix ships it as part of the platform.

06

Hyperscaler-independent

Microsoft is also the vendor of Azure, GitHub, Entra, M365 — and increasingly OpenAI services. If your buying committee values security tooling that's independent of any one hyperscaler (no conflicting incentives, no roadmap gravity toward Azure-first), Cloudanix is the simpler answer.

Common questions

What buyers ask us about Defender for Cloud.

Doesn't Defender for Cloud already cover multi-cloud?

It supports AWS and GCP — but the support is Azure-first by design, and parity lags. Coverage of AWS-specific resource types, time-to-ship features, and policy language all favour Azure. For Azure-deep teams with light AWS / GCP, that's workable. For multi-cloud teams that need equal depth across all three, you'll feel the asymmetry — and that's where a hyperscaler-independent CNAPP like Cloudanix is the more honest fit.

Isn't Entra PIM enough for JIT?

Entra PIM elevates a user into a pre-defined role for a window — that's role-based just-in-time elevation. It's useful and many teams stop there. The gap: it's role-shaped, not request-shaped (you can't say "this user, for this specific resource, for the next 15 minutes"), it's Entra-bound (doesn't broker for non-Entra identities like CI/CD service accounts or AI agents), and it doesn't extend to databases or Kubernetes-namespace-scoped access the same way. Cloudanix is a JIT broker — short-lived intent-scoped credentials, per-request, across identity types. See JIT →

How does Cloudanix handle AI coding agents that Defender doesn't?

Cloudanix exposes itself as an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server. When Claude Code, Cursor, Kiro or Codex needs a cloud credential, the request goes through Cloudanix — short-lived intent-scoped credentials brokered to the agent, risky actions gated on human approval, destructive ones blocked at policy, every action identity-stamped to the human operator. Microsoft has no MCP-broker product today; the realistic alternatives are long-lived service principals (audit risk) or shared developer credentials (worse). See the Coding Agent Firewall →

What about GitHub Advanced Security for code coverage?

GHAS is genuinely good — CodeQL for SAST, secrets scanning, dependency review. The constraints: it's a separate SKU layered on top of GitHub Enterprise, the procurement is field-led at scale, and the platform is GitHub-centric (less natural fit if your repos live elsewhere or you use multiple Git platforms). Cloudanix ships SAST, SCA, secrets, IaC and container image scanning as part of the CNAPP platform — same console, same query, same identity-stamped findings as everything else. See Code Security →

Does Defender for Cloud do DAM?

Defender for SQL surfaces threats against Azure SQL / SQL MI / SQL on VMs — useful, but it's monitor-and-alert, not access-broker, and it's Azure-SQL-shaped (less natural fit for PostgreSQL on RDS, Cosmos, Aurora, Cloud SQL). Cloudanix Database JIT + DAM works across the database tier you actually run, with brokered keyless access, live query observability and anomaly detection, plus optional data masking. See DAM →

What about regional / sovereign deployment?

Microsoft's regional footprint is one of the broadest in the industry through Azure regions and sovereign clouds. For Cloudanix, the four independent regional control planes (US, EU Frankfurt, India Mumbai, Middle East) plus CloudPrem (inside your own VPC) is what we specifically optimised for. For India RBI / DPDPA, Saudi SAMA / PDPL, and Schrems-II-strict EU buyers, our region-native deployment posture is typically the cleaner answer. See data residency →
