A posture rule has to pick one severity for every account, every environment and every asset it will ever evaluate — so it picks the worst case, and your internal log bucket arrives looking exactly as urgent as the one serving the public internet. Cloudanix evaluates the rule per asset and adjusts from there, with the factors that fired attached to the finding.

The problem

Posture queues are big because severity is blunt, not because the rules are wrong.

Most teams do not have a detection problem in CSPM. They have a ranking problem — and no way to fix it that survives the next scan.

Worst-case severity, applied everywhere

The rule author cannot know your environment, so the severity assumes the most exposed asset in the worst account. Every other asset inherits that assumption.

The only lever is mute

When you cannot move a severity, you suppress it. That removes the finding permanently — including the day the asset becomes internet-facing and it starts to matter.

Tags are not context

A rule that keys off env:prod is only as good as your tagging discipline. Real exposure runs through policies, ACLs, endpoints and route tables — that is a graph question.

How it works

How a misconfiguration gets its severity.

Nothing here is hard-coded per rule, and a policy with no meaningful context simply keeps its base severity — which is why turning this on is safe rather than a leap of faith.

The policy declares the context it cares about

Each rule is authored with the conditions that genuinely change its risk, and in which direction. Context can escalate a finding as readily as it discounts one — this is not a de-escalation feature wearing a neutral name.

Enabling freezes your copy

Switching a policy to Contextual snapshots the criteria into your workspace. Later changes we make to the template do not move your severities until you choose to adopt them, so a Cloudanix release never silently re-ranks your queue.

The posture run scores every asset

Each failed asset is evaluated against its own graph context — resolved internet reachability, environment, data sensitivity. This happens inside the existing posture pipeline, so there is no second job and no separate latency to explain.

Everything downstream agrees

The finding list, the severity filter, the per-rule rollup, the alert threshold and the report all read the same effective value. There is no view where the old number leaks back in.

The factors

The context a misconfiguration is weighed against.

Not a fixed checklist — which of these matter is already decided per policy, and the set grows as your graph does. You do not tune any of it.

Internet exposure

Resolved reachability, not a public flag. The strongest de-escalation signal in practice, because most failed assets in most accounts genuinely are not reachable.

Environment

Production versus everything else, read from the workspace's own environment model rather than inferred from tag conventions that drift.

Data sensitivity

Whether the asset holds or reaches regulated or customer data. A weak transport policy in front of nothing is not the same finding as one in front of PII.

Attack path present

Whether the graph has already confirmed a chain from the internet to this asset. The strongest escalation signal available — see Attack Path.

Steps are signed. A moderate-severity control failing on an exposed production asset carrying customer data moves up, which is the half of this feature most tools skip entirely.

An answer for the audit review

Every adjusted finding carries its base, its direction and the named factors that fired. When someone asks why this was Medium, there is a specific answer rather than a model score.

What is contextual severity for misconfigurations?

It is severity decided by the asset a rule landed on rather than fixed on the rule itself. Cloudanix reads the live context the security graph already holds about that asset — how it is exposed, what it holds, what it can reach, what runs on it — and reports a severity that reflects it, along with the conditions that produced it. Does de-escalating a finding affect my compliance posture?

No. Compliance completion is pass/fail, never severity-weighted. A de-escalated finding is still an open finding against every framework it maps to, so nothing can quietly complete SOC 2, ISO 27001 or PCI DSS because a severity dropped. The two systems are deliberately independent.

What happens when an asset's context changes?

Posture findings are current-state, so severity is recomputed on the next run. The day an internal bucket becomes internet-facing, its findings escalate automatically — no re-triage, and no muted alert that never comes back.

Can I still set severities myself?

Yes. Contextual is the default, but any policy can be pinned to a value you choose, or switched back to a single flat severity. Because the setting is per policy, you can leave the bulk of your estate on Contextual and pin only the controls your auditor treats as non-negotiable. See the severity modes.

How is this different from suppressing or muting findings?

Suppression removes the signal. Contextual severity keeps the finding, keeps it in compliance scope, keeps it queryable, and keeps it able to escalate later — it only changes how loudly it is reported. That difference is the entire point.

Is this the same as a risk score?

No, and that is deliberate. A separate risk score sits beside the severity that still drives your alerts and reports, so teams end up with two truths and follow the old one. Contextual severity changes the severity itself, so every consumer agrees.
