What it actually does

The HDF5 library may dereference uninitialized values inside h5tools_str_sprint during simple data dumping, resulting in memory corruption or process crashes.

Why it matters to the business

Processing untrusted HDF5 files with affected tools can cause unexpected application failures or data-handling interruptions; the large number of downstream packages increases exposure across scientific and data-analysis environments.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a specially formed HDF5 file and supplies it to any application or command-line tool that invokes h5tools_dump_simple_data; when the tool reaches h5tools_str_sprint the uninitialized pointer is dereferenced, triggering memory corruption.

How to fix it

Upgrade hdfgroup/hdf5 to the commit 88429b015e29c59de604b0f552001fb7cb7ed5d0 or later; rebuild and redeploy all dependent applications and tools that link against the library.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed library reports a commit at or after 88429b015e29c59de604b0f552001fb7cb7ed5d0; run h5dump against test files that previously triggered the uninitialized dereference and verify no crash occurs.

Typical attack path

  1. Attacker prepares a malicious HDF5 file designed to reach the vulnerable dump path.
  2. Victim or automated process opens the file using h5dump, h5ls, or any linked application.
  3. h5tools_dump_simple_data calls h5tools_str_sprint on uninitialized data.
  4. Uninitialized pointer dereference occurs, leading to crash or corruption.

How to detect it

Search application and system logs for segmentation faults or abnormal exits immediately after HDF5 file processing; monitor for repeated crashes of h5dump, h5ls, or any custom binary that links libhdf5 when handling external files.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize upgrade of hdfgroup/hdf5 to the fixed commit in all build pipelines and container images.
  • Scan internal package repositories for any version prior to the fix and replace them.
  • Add automated build-time version checks to prevent reintroduction of vulnerable releases.
  • Review and update any custom HDF5 processing scripts that rely on the affected dump utilities.

The record

HDF5 Library through 1.14.3 may attempt to dereference uninitialized values in h5tools_str_sprint in tools/lib/h5tools_str.c (called from h5tools_dump_simple_data in tools/lib/h5tools_dump.c).
