What it actually does

The flaw triggers excessive stack consumption inside H5E_printf_stack during error formatting, enabling an attacker to force stack overflow conditions that result in disclosure of memory contents.

Why it matters to the business

Systems processing untrusted HDF5 files or network inputs risk exposure of sensitive internal data, increasing the chance of data breaches and regulatory penalties without immediate service disruption.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker supplies a specially crafted HDF5 dataset or triggers error paths over the network that cause repeated or deeply nested calls to the error-printing routine, overflowing the stack and allowing memory contents to be read.

How to fix it

Upgrade the HDF5 library dependency to a version containing commit 2c2c243964dda97a82eddb3804e39f9665c574bb or later; rebuild and redeploy affected applications such as openitcockpit after the library update.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the running binary links against a patched HDF5 build, re-execute error-triggering test cases, and verify that stack usage remains bounded under the same inputs that previously caused consumption.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify a reachable service or application that consumes HDF5 data or invokes the library error paths
  2. Craft input that forces error conditions leading to repeated calls into H5E_printf_stack
  3. Deliver the input via network or file to trigger stack growth
  4. Observe or exfiltrate memory contents disclosed by the overflow

How to detect it

Monitor process logs and crash dumps for abnormal stack growth or segmentation faults originating from HDF5 error routines; correlate with inbound HDF5 file uploads or API calls that produce error conditions.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching the HDF5 dependency within the next maintenance window given the network-reachable attack surface
  • Add the fixed commit hash to dependency scanning policies to prevent regression
  • Review logging and error-handling paths in applications using HDF5 to reduce unnecessary error printing under load

The record

HDF5 Library through 1.14.3 allows stack consumption in the function H5E_printf_stack in H5Eint.c.
