What it actually does
Heap buffer overflow in H5S__point_deserialize allows out-of-bounds memory write when deserializing malformed point selection data in HDF5 files.
Why it matters to the business
Applications processing scientific or multidimensional data may crash or allow attackers to execute arbitrary code, disrupting research workflows and data pipelines that depend on this library.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker creates a specially crafted HDF5 file containing malformed point selection metadata, then causes a vulnerable application to open and parse the file, triggering the overflow during deserialization in H5Spoint.c.
How to fix it
Upgrade hdfgroup/hdf5 to the commit 88429b015e29c59de604b0f552001fb7cb7ed5d0 or later; rebuild dependent applications against the patched library and verify the fix is present in production deployments.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed library reports a commit at or after 88429b015e29c59de604b0f552001fb7cb7ed5d0; run regression tests with malformed point-selection HDF5 files to ensure no crash or memory corruption occurs.
Typical attack path
- Identify or compromise an application that uses the vulnerable HDF5 library to read files
- Craft a malicious HDF5 file with oversized or invalid point selection data
- Deliver the file to the target system via email, download, or shared storage
- Trigger parsing of the file to execute the overflow and gain control or cause denial of service
How to detect it
Monitor application logs for segmentation faults or heap corruption errors during HDF5 file parsing; inspect crash dumps for references to H5S__point_deserialize and review any recent HDF5 files opened before the incident.
What your security team should do
- Immediately update all instances of hdfgroup/hdf5 to the fixed commit and rebuild dependent software
- Inventory applications that consume HDF5 files and prioritize patching those exposed to untrusted input
- Add the library to vulnerability scanning and dependency monitoring pipelines
The record
HDF5 Library through 1.14.3 has a heap buffer overflow in H5S__point_deserialize in H5Spoint.c.
