What it actually does

Heap-based buffer overflow in H5HG_read allows corruption of the instruction pointer during blob retrieval in the native VOL connector.

Why it matters to the business

Applications that read untrusted HDF5 files may crash or execute attacker-controlled code, disrupting scientific data workflows and potentially enabling further compromise of analysis systems.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker supplies a specially crafted HDF5 file that, when opened by a vulnerable application, triggers the overflow in H5HG_read during native blob handling, allowing control of the instruction pointer and arbitrary code execution.

How to fix it

Upgrade hdfgroup/hdf5 to commit 88429b015e29c59de604b0f552001fb7cb7ed5d0 or later; rebuild and redeploy all dependent applications; validate with regression tests against the fixed library.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm installed HDF5 version reports a commit newer than 88429b015e29c59de604b0f552001fb7cb7ed5d0; run unit tests that exercise H5HG_read and H5VL__native_blob_get paths; monitor for absence of crashes on known-bad test files.

Typical attack path

  1. Craft malicious HDF5 file containing oversized or malformed global heap data
  2. Deliver file to target via email, download, or shared storage
  3. Victim application opens file using vulnerable HDF5 library
  4. H5VL__native_blob_get invokes H5HG_read triggering heap overflow
  5. Instruction pointer is corrupted leading to attacker-controlled execution

How to detect it

Review application logs and crash dumps for segmentation faults or memory corruption signals during HDF5 file processing; search process execution history for unexpected child processes spawned after HDF5 file opens.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize upgrade of HDF5 in all build pipelines and container images within 30 days given publication age
  • Inventory all software that links against libhdf5 and schedule phased updates
  • Add HDF5 version checks to software composition analysis tooling
  • Block or sandbox untrusted HDF5 file ingestion until patched

The record

HDF5 Library through 1.14.3 contains a heap-based buffer overflow in H5HG_read in H5HG.c (called from H5VL__native_blob_get in H5VLnative_blob.c), resulting in the corruption of the instruction pointer.
