Schedule a fix SSVC: Track

A bug in a widely used data library can let attackers crash or take control of programs that read certain data files, so organizations should update the library promptly to avoid service disruptions or security incidents.

What it actually does

Heap-based buffer overflow in H5T__conv_struct_opt during optimized structure type conversion allows out-of-bounds writes on the heap when processing malformed HDF5 type definitions.

Why it matters to the business

Applications using HDF5 for scientific data handling risk crashes, data corruption, or remote code execution, disrupting analytics pipelines and potentially compromising systems that ingest untrusted files.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker creates a malicious HDF5 file with specially crafted structure types that trigger excessive buffer allocation during conversion; when a vulnerable application parses the file, the overflow occurs and can be leveraged for code execution or denial of service.

How to fix it

Upgrade hdfgroup/hdf5 to the commit 88429b015e29c59de604b0f552001fb7cb7ed5d0 or later; rebuild and redeploy all dependent applications after the update.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed HDF5 library reports a version containing commit 88429b015e29c59de604b0f552001fb7cb7ed5d0; run regression tests exercising structure type conversion on boundary inputs.

Typical attack path

  1. Craft HDF5 file containing malformed structure type definitions
  2. Deliver file to target application or service that uses HDF5
  3. Trigger H5T__conv_struct_opt via normal file parsing or type conversion
  4. Achieve heap corruption leading to code execution or crash

How to detect it

Monitor application and system logs for segmentation faults or heap-related errors during HDF5 file processing; correlate crashes with file ingestion timestamps and inspect any retained malicious HDF5 files for anomalous structure definitions.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately inventory all systems and containers using HDF5 and schedule upgrades to the fixed commit
  • Apply network segmentation or file validation controls around services that accept external HDF5 files until patched
  • Update vulnerability management policies to treat future HDF5 releases as high-priority library updates

The record

HDF5 Library through 1.14.3 has a heap-based buffer overflow in H5T__conv_struct_opt in H5Tconv.c.
