What it actually does

Null pointer dereference or invalid memory access in H5A__close causes segmentation fault and corrupts the instruction pointer during HDF5 attribute closure.

Why it matters to the business

Applications processing untrusted HDF5 files may crash or allow remote code execution, disrupting scientific data workflows and analysis pipelines that depend on the library.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker supplies a specially crafted HDF5 file containing malformed attributes; when the victim application opens the file and closes attributes, the vulnerable function triggers memory corruption that an attacker can leverage for control-flow hijacking.

How to fix it

Upgrade hdfgroup/hdf5 to the commit 88429b015e29c59de604b0f552001fb7cb7ed5d0 or later release containing the fix; rebuild dependent applications against the patched library.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed HDF5 library reports a version or commit newer than 88429b015e29c59de604b0f552001fb7cb7ed5d0; re-test parsing of known-malformed attribute files to verify absence of the crash.

Typical attack path

  1. Deliver malicious HDF5 file to target application or user
  2. Application opens file and processes attributes using HDF5 library
  3. H5A__close is invoked on malformed attribute object
  4. Memory corruption occurs, enabling instruction pointer overwrite
  5. Attacker payload executes arbitrary code or causes denial of service

How to detect it

Review application crash logs and core dumps for segmentation faults originating from H5A__close or H5Aint.c; correlate file-open events involving .h5 files immediately preceding the crash.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately update all HDF5 installations to the fixed commit across development, testing, and production environments
  • Scan source repositories and dependency manifests for references to vulnerable HDF5 versions and replace them
  • Add HDF5 library version checks to build pipelines and container images
  • Monitor for new exploit code or public proof-of-concept releases given the library's wide use in data science

The record

HDF5 Library through 1.14.3 has a SEGV in H5A__close in H5Aint.c, resulting in the corruption of the instruction pointer.
