What it actually does

Multiple memory safety bugs result in memory corruption that can be leveraged for arbitrary code execution.

Why it matters to the business

Remote attackers can fully compromise affected Craft CMS instances, leading to data theft, defacement, or persistent access; the high CVSS and multi-year exposure window increase urgency for any deployments still on vulnerable code.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker sends specially crafted network requests or content that trigger the memory corruption conditions; with sufficient effort the corruption is turned into arbitrary code execution without authentication or user interaction.

How to fix it

Upgrade craftcms/cms to commit 0ee66d29281af2b6c4f866e1437842c61983a672 or later; verify the update in all environments and remove any workarounds once patched.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the deployed commit hash matches or exceeds 0ee66d29281af2b6c4f866e1437842c61983a672 and run regression tests that exercise memory-intensive code paths.

Typical attack path

  1. Scan for publicly reachable Craft CMS instances running versions before the fixed commit
  2. Craft and deliver a malicious payload that triggers one of the memory safety bugs
  3. Achieve memory corruption and escalate to arbitrary code execution
  4. Install persistence, exfiltrate data, or move laterally

How to detect it

Search application and web server logs for anomalous crashes, segmentation faults, or memory allocation failures around the time of suspicious requests; monitor for unexpected child processes spawned by the web server.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately upgrade all Craft CMS instances to the listed fixed commit
  • Add the fixed commit to dependency scanning and SBOM policies
  • Review logs for post-2019-09-27 indicators of memory-related crashes or unexpected code execution

The record

Mozilla developers and community members reported memory safety bugs present in Firefox 68. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort that some of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 69.
