What it actually does

Uninitialized use in the V8 JavaScript engine allows reading of uninitialized process memory, resulting in disclosure of potentially sensitive data such as credentials or internal browser state.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can exfiltrate sensitive information from users who visit malicious web pages, increasing risk of credential theft and data leakage across the browser user base.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker hosts a crafted HTML page that triggers the uninitialized memory read in V8 when rendered by an affected Chrome version; the leaked memory contents are then sent back to the attacker.

How to fix it

Upgrade Google Chrome to version 87.0.4280.88 or later on all systems; enable automatic updates where possible and verify installation of the fixed build.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed Chrome version is 87.0.4280.88 or newer via chrome://version; test that crafted proof-of-concept pages no longer leak memory contents.

Typical attack path

  1. Attacker prepares and hosts a malicious HTML page exploiting the V8 uninitialized use
  2. Victim is tricked into visiting the page via phishing or compromised site
  3. Browser renders the page and leaks memory contents to attacker-controlled server
  4. Attacker parses and uses the disclosed sensitive information

How to detect it

Review web proxy and browser history logs for visits to suspicious or newly registered domains; inspect for unexpected outbound requests containing large or random-looking data blobs after page loads.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately deploy Chrome 87.0.4280.88 or later across the environment
  • Monitor browser update compliance dashboards
  • Block or warn on access to known malicious domains hosting exploit pages

The record

Uninitialized Use in V8 in Google Chrome prior to 87.0.4280.88 allowed a remote attacker to obtain potentially sensitive information from process memory via a crafted HTML page.
