What it actually does
The PDF reader mishandles chunked cross-origin responses, allowing a crafted PDF opened by the user to read and exfiltrate limited cross-origin data that should have been isolated.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers can obtain small amounts of sensitive information from other sites the victim visits, creating a modest risk of data exposure that grows with the number of users who open untrusted PDFs in affected browsers.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker hosts a malicious PDF served with chunked transfer encoding; when the user clicks and opens it in the vulnerable browser, the PDF reader incorrectly allows the document to access and leak cross-origin responses.
How to fix it
Upgrade Mozilla Firefox to version 85 or later, Firefox ESR to 78.7 or later, and Thunderbird to 78.7 or later. Block untrusted PDFs at the network or email gateway until patching is complete.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm browser and email client versions meet or exceed the fixed releases listed above; re-test by attempting to open a known trigger PDF in a lab environment and verifying that cross-origin responses remain inaccessible.
Typical attack path
- Attacker crafts a PDF that triggers the chunked-response parsing flaw
- Attacker hosts the PDF on a site the victim is tricked into visiting
- Victim clicks the link and the PDF opens inside the browser
- PDF reader leaks limited cross-origin data back to the attacker
How to detect it
Review browser process logs and network telemetry for unexpected cross-origin requests immediately after PDF rendering; correlate with user click events on external PDF links and look for data exfiltration patterns matching chunked response sizes.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching all Firefox, ESR, and Thunderbird instances to the fixed versions within the next 30 days
- Deploy application allow-listing or browser isolation for users who routinely open PDFs from external sources
- Update email and web proxies to strip or sandbox PDF attachments until the fleet is current
The record
If a user clicked into a specifically crafted PDF, the PDF reader could be confused into leaking cross-origin information, when said information is served as chunked data. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 85, Thunderbird < 78.7, and Firefox ESR < 78.7.
