What it actually does
The flaw permits an attacker-controlled webpage to perform SSRF-style requests that enumerate and interact with hosts on the victim's internal network and with services bound to the local loopback interface.
Why it matters to the business
Successful exploitation can disclose the existence and behavior of internal systems and local services, increasing the chance of follow-on attacks against the organization and violating network segmentation assumptions.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts a malicious webpage that leverages slipstream techniques; when a user on a vulnerable Firefox browser visits the page, the browser is induced to issue cross-origin requests that reveal internal hosts and local services without user interaction beyond page load.
How to fix it
Upgrade Mozilla Firefox to version 85 or later on all affected systems; apply the same update through distribution channels for Debian and other downstream packages once rebuilt versions become available.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed Firefox version is 85 or higher; re-test internal network reachability from a browser instance after the upgrade to verify the SSRF vectors are blocked.
Typical attack path
- Attacker hosts a malicious webpage containing the slipstream exploit code
- Victim is lured to the page via phishing or compromised site
- Browser processes the page and issues crafted requests to internal and localhost targets
- Responses or timing side-channels leak host and service information back to the attacker
How to detect it
Review web-proxy logs and browser process activity for unexpected outbound requests to internal IP ranges or localhost ports originating from browser processes after a visit to an untrusted domain.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize immediate deployment of Firefox 85+ across the fleet
- Review browser update policies and enforce automatic updates where possible
- Audit any web-proxy or endpoint controls that could block untrusted pages from issuing internal requests
The record
Further techniques that built on the slipstream research combined with a malicious webpage could have exposed both an internal network's hosts as well as services running on the user's local machine. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 85.
