What it actually does
Side-channel information leakage in the graphics subsystem allows a remote attacker to extract cross-origin data through timing or other observable side effects triggered by a specially crafted HTML page.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers can obtain sensitive information from other web origins the victim visits, increasing risk of privacy violations, credential theft, or targeted follow-on attacks; the issue affects widely deployed browsers with stable but non-zero exploit availability.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker hosts a malicious HTML page that loads cross-origin resources while measuring graphics-related side-channel signals; a victim is lured to the page, and the browser's rendering behavior leaks data across origin boundaries without direct access.
How to fix it
Upgrade Google Chrome to version 87.0.4280.66 or later; apply equivalent updates to Mozilla Firefox when available; enforce browser auto-update policies and remove unsupported versions from the environment.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm browser version is at or above the fixed release; test with proof-of-concept pages that attempt cross-origin data exfiltration and verify no leakage occurs; review update logs and enterprise deployment dashboards for patch status.
Typical attack path
- Attacker prepares crafted HTML page exploiting graphics side-channel
- Victim is tricked into visiting the page via phishing or malicious link
- Browser renders the page and leaks cross-origin information through observable side effects
- Attacker collects leaked data for further attacks or direct use
How to detect it
Review web proxy and browser telemetry logs for visits to domains hosting known exploit pages; look for unusual rendering or timing artifacts in debug logs; correlate with threat intelligence on campaigns using similar browser side-channel techniques.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize browser updates across all managed endpoints within the next maintenance window
- Enable enterprise policies that force automatic updates and block outdated versions
- Monitor EPSS and exploit maturity indicators for any increase in observed in-the-wild usage
- Educate users on avoiding untrusted links that could trigger browser-based leaks
The record
Side-channel information leakage in graphics in Google Chrome prior to 87.0.4280.66 allowed a remote attacker to leak cross-origin data via a crafted HTML page.
