What it actually does

Memory corruption flaws in the browser engine allow an attacker to write arbitrary data to process memory and potentially redirect execution to attacker-controlled code.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can silently install malware, steal credentials or sensitive data, or take full control of a user's workstation after the user visits a malicious site, increasing incident response costs and regulatory exposure.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker hosts a specially crafted web page that triggers one of the memory-safety bugs when rendered by the vulnerable browser; with sufficient effort the corruption can be turned into arbitrary code execution, granting the attacker the same privileges as the browser process.

How to fix it

Upgrade Mozilla Firefox to version 62 or later on all affected systems; apply the corresponding Ubuntu security updates once they reference the fixed Firefox package.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed Firefox version is 62 or newer via the about:support page or package manager output; retest any custom browser policies or enterprise deployment scripts after the update.

Typical attack path

  1. Attacker prepares and hosts a malicious HTML/JavaScript payload exploiting one of the memory-safety issues.
  2. Victim is lured to the attacker-controlled page via phishing, compromised site, or malvertising.
  3. Page renders in vulnerable Firefox and triggers memory corruption.
  4. Attacker leverages the corruption to achieve code execution and install further payloads or exfiltrate data.

How to detect it

Search web-proxy and endpoint logs for visits to domains or URLs previously associated with exploitation of this class of browser memory issues; examine crash reports containing unusual memory patterns or unexpected child processes spawned by the browser.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching all Firefox instances to version 62+ within the next maintenance window.
  • Block or monitor outbound traffic from endpoints still running Firefox 61 or earlier.
  • Review browser extension allow-lists and remove unnecessary third-party add-ons that increase attack surface.

The record

Memory safety bugs present in Firefox 61. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort that some of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 62.
