What it actually does
Multiple memory safety bugs resulting in memory corruption that can be leveraged for arbitrary code execution.
Why it matters to the business
Remote attackers can fully compromise user systems running affected browsers or email clients, enabling data theft, malware deployment, or further network pivoting; widespread use of these products increases organizational exposure.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts malicious web content or email that triggers one of the memory corruption flaws during parsing or rendering, leading to control of the instruction pointer and execution of attacker-supplied code.
How to fix it
Upgrade Firefox to 64 or later, Firefox ESR to 60.4 or later, and Thunderbird to 60.4 or later; apply equivalent updates from Linux distributions once available.
How to confirm the fix worked
Inspect installed product versions against the minimum fixed releases and confirm no vulnerable builds remain in the environment.
Typical attack path
- Deliver malicious webpage or email to victim
- Victim application processes crafted content triggering memory corruption
- Overwrite control structures to redirect execution
- Execute arbitrary code in browser or email client process
How to detect it
Monitor browser and email client crash reports, memory violation events, and unexpected child process spawns; correlate with web or email logs for access to suspicious domains or attachments around the time of anomalies.
What your security team should do
- Immediately update all Mozilla Firefox, ESR, and Thunderbird installations to fixed versions
- Block or sandbox access to untrusted web content until patches are deployed
- Review endpoint detection rules for browser process anomalies
The record
Mozilla developers and community members reported memory safety bugs present in Firefox 63 and Firefox ESR 60.3. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort that some of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code. This vulnerability affects Thunderbird < 60.4, Firefox ESR < 60.4, and Firefox < 64.
