What it actually does
Multiple memory safety bugs in the browser engine allow memory corruption that can be leveraged for arbitrary code execution when processing untrusted web content.
Why it matters to the business
Compromised user workstations could lead to credential theft, lateral movement, data exfiltration, or ransomware deployment, increasing incident response costs and regulatory exposure across the organization.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts a malicious web page that triggers one of the memory corruption conditions during rendering or script execution; with sufficient effort the corruption is turned into a write-what-where primitive that ultimately executes attacker-supplied shellcode in the context of the browser process.
How to fix it
Upgrade Mozilla Firefox ESR to version 60.3 or later and Mozilla Thunderbird to version 60.3 or later; apply equivalent updates through Linux distribution package managers where Firefox ESR or Thunderbird packages are provided by the OS vendor.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm installed versions are at or above ESR 60.3 / Thunderbird 60.3 using the browser about:support page or package manager queries; re-test affected web content in a lab environment to verify crashes no longer occur.
Typical attack path
- Attacker hosts or compromises a web server delivering a crafted HTML/JavaScript payload
- Victim user visits the page using an affected Firefox ESR or Thunderbird version
- Browser parses and renders the content, triggering a memory-safety violation
- Attacker chains the corruption into code execution within the browser sandbox or process
- Payload downloads and executes additional malware or establishes persistence
How to detect it
Search browser crash logs and telemetry for repeated or unusual memory-corruption crashes on older ESR 60.2 builds; correlate with web proxy logs showing visits to previously unknown or suspicious domains around the time of any observed instability.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching of all Firefox ESR and Thunderbird installations within the next maintenance window
- Enable automatic updates where policy permits and verify update success via inventory scans
- Review browser extension allow-lists and reduce privileges for users who browse untrusted sites
- Add browser process crash telemetry to SOC monitoring for early anomaly detection
The record
Mozilla developers and community members reported memory safety bugs present in Firefox ESR 60.2. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort that some of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code. This vulnerability affects Firefox ESR < 60.3 and Thunderbird < 60.3.
