What it actually does

Multiple memory safety bugs resulting in memory corruption that can be leveraged for arbitrary code execution within the browser process.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can gain full control over affected user systems, enabling theft of credentials, installation of malware, or unauthorized access to corporate resources accessed via the browser.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker hosts or compromises a web page that triggers one of the memory corruption conditions when rendered in an unpatched Firefox version; with sufficient effort the corruption is turned into reliable code execution, allowing the attacker to run arbitrary payloads on the victim's machine.

How to fix it

Upgrade Mozilla Firefox to version 63 or later on all platforms; apply equivalent updates through distribution channels such as Canonical Ubuntu package repositories when available.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify browser version reports 63 or higher; retest affected web content or use memory-safety tooling to confirm absence of the reported corruption vectors.

Typical attack path

  1. Deliver malicious HTML or JavaScript via a compromised or attacker-controlled website
  2. Trigger memory corruption through crafted content or DOM operations
  3. Achieve arbitrary code execution and establish persistence or exfiltrate data

How to detect it

Examine web proxy and browser process logs for unexpected crashes or memory-related error patterns around the time of suspected incidents; correlate with network requests to previously unknown domains.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize immediate deployment of Firefox 63+ across all endpoints
  • Enable automatic updates and enforce version checks via endpoint management
  • Review browser extension and plugin inventory for additional attack surface

The record

Mozilla developers and community members reported memory safety bugs present in Firefox 62. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort that some of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 63.
