What it actually does
Multiple memory safety bugs in the browser engine lead to memory corruption conditions that can be leveraged for arbitrary code execution.
Why it matters to the business
Compromised endpoints can result in theft of credentials and sensitive data, installation of persistent malware, and disruption of user productivity across the organization.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker hosts or injects malicious content that triggers one of the memory corruption bugs when processed by an unpatched browser; with sufficient effort the corruption is turned into code execution, allowing the attacker to run arbitrary commands on the victim system.
How to fix it
Upgrade Mozilla Firefox to version 66 or later, Firefox ESR to 60.6 or later, and Thunderbird to 60.6 or later. Apply the corresponding Red Hat package updates for Enterprise Linux systems once available.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify installed browser and mail client versions against the fixed releases; re-scan systems with vulnerability management tools after patching to confirm absence of the vulnerable builds.
Typical attack path
- Host or compromise a web page or email attachment containing a crafted payload
- Victim opens the content in an affected browser or mail client
- Memory corruption is triggered during rendering or parsing
- Attacker achieves arbitrary code execution and establishes persistence or exfiltrates data
How to detect it
Examine browser crash reports, process creation logs, and EDR telemetry for anomalous child processes spawned from browser executables; review proxy and web logs for visits to suspicious domains around the time of any unexplained crashes.
What your security team should do
- Immediately deploy available browser and mail client updates to all endpoints
- Block or monitor access to known malicious domains that historically targeted browser memory issues
- Enable application allow-listing and restrict execution of unsigned code on high-risk systems
- Review endpoint detection logs for any post-2019 suspicious browser crashes or child-process spawns
The record
Mozilla developers and community members reported memory safety bugs present in Firefox 65, Firefox ESR 60.5, and Thunderbird 60.5. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort that some of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code. This vulnerability affects Thunderbird < 60.6, Firefox ESR < 60.6, and Firefox < 66.
