What it actually does
Multiple memory safety issues resulting in memory corruption that can be leveraged for arbitrary code execution within the browser or email client process.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers could gain complete control over user systems running outdated browser or email software, enabling theft of sensitive data, installation of persistent malware, or further network pivoting, though current exploitation risk remains low.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker delivers specially crafted web content or email messages that trigger the memory corruption bugs during parsing or rendering, allowing the attacker to overwrite memory and execute arbitrary native code with the privileges of the affected application.
How to fix it
Upgrade Mozilla Firefox to version 62 or later, Firefox ESR to 60.2 or later, and Thunderbird to 60.2.1 or later. Apply equivalent updates from Linux distribution vendors for packaged versions.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify installed application versions against the fixed releases listed by Mozilla and distribution vendors; re-test affected functionality after patching to confirm stability.
Typical attack path
- Serve malicious HTML, JavaScript, or email content to the target
- Trigger one of the memory safety bugs during content processing
- Achieve memory corruption and construct an exploit primitive
- Execute arbitrary code and establish persistence or exfiltrate data
How to detect it
Examine browser and email client crash logs, process creation events, and network traffic for unexpected outbound connections following content rendering; correlate with known malicious sites or email senders from the period surrounding disclosure.
What your security team should do
- Immediately inventory and update all instances of Firefox, Firefox ESR, and Thunderbird to the fixed releases
- Enforce automatic update policies where possible and monitor for unsupported installations
- Review endpoint protection logs for any historical indicators of browser process anomalies
The record
Memory safety bugs present in Firefox 61 and Firefox ESR 60.1. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort that some of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 62, Firefox ESR < 60.2, and Thunderbird < 60.2.1.
