What it actually does
Use-after-free vulnerability in ext4_ext_remove_space() allows a local attacker to trigger memory corruption when a crafted ext4 filesystem image is mounted and operated on.
Why it matters to the business
Linux systems using the ext4 filesystem face risk of local denial-of-service crashes from malicious storage images; the issue has been publicly exploitable for years with no ransomware association or widespread campaigns reported.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker creates a malicious ext4 image that triggers the use-after-free during space removal operations, then mounts and accesses the image on a vulnerable kernel; public exploits have been available since disclosure.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing commit 8844618d8aa7a9973e7b527d038a2a589665002c or later; rebuild and reboot with the patched kernel; avoid mounting untrusted ext4 images until updated.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel contains commit 8844618d8aa7a9973e7b527d038a2a589665002c via git describe or kernel version strings; test mounting known-good and crafted images on updated systems to confirm stability.
Typical attack path
- Craft a malicious ext4 filesystem image exploiting the use-after-free condition
- Obtain local access or physical media access to the target Linux system
- Mount the crafted image using mount or similar filesystem utilities
- Perform file or directory operations that invoke ext4_ext_remove_space()
- Trigger kernel panic or system instability
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for oops or panic messages related to ext4_ext_remove_space after mounting external images; examine audit logs for unusual mount operations on ext4 volumes from untrusted sources.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all ext4-using Linux hosts within standard patching cycles
- Restrict local user ability to mount arbitrary filesystem images via mount options or policies
- Monitor for new kernel releases and apply them promptly given the public exploit availability
The record
A flaw was found in Linux kernel in the ext4 filesystem code. A use-after-free is possible in ext4_ext_remove_space() function when mounting and operating a crafted ext4 image.
