What it actually does
Out-of-bounds read during SMB2 transform header parsing in the ksmbd kernel module due to insufficient validation of user-supplied data, resulting in disclosure of kernel memory contents.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers may obtain sensitive information from Linux systems that have the ksmbd module enabled, increasing risk of data exposure on file-sharing servers.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker connects to a ksmbd-enabled SMB server and sends specially crafted SMB2 requests containing a transform header; the missing bounds check allows reading past the allocated buffer and returning leaked memory in server responses.
How to fix it
Disable the ksmbd kernel module when not required; otherwise apply the appropriate Linux kernel update that resolves the parsing flaw in SMB2 transform header handling.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify ksmbd is disabled or confirm the installed kernel version contains the upstream fix; attempt controlled SMB2 requests with transform headers in a test environment to ensure no excess data is returned.
Typical attack path
- Establish an SMB connection to a target system with ksmbd enabled
- Transmit malformed SMB2 packets that include a transform header
- Trigger the out-of-bounds read and capture the response containing leaked data
- Parse the returned buffer contents for sensitive information such as credentials or keys
How to detect it
Inspect SMB server logs and network captures for repeated or malformed SMB2 requests containing transform headers; correlate with ksmbd process activity and unexpected outbound data volumes.
What your security team should do
- Audit all Linux systems for ksmbd usage and disable the module via kernel configuration where feasible
- Prioritize kernel updates on any remaining ksmbd deployments
- Monitor network traffic for anomalous SMB2 activity on ports 445 and 139
- Review logging configurations to retain SMB connection and error events for at least 90 days
The record
A flaw was found within the parsing of SMB2 requests that have a transform header in the kernel ksmbd module. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of user-supplied data, which can result in a read past the end of an allocated buffer. An attacker can leverage this to disclose sensitive information on affected installations of Linux. Only systems with ksmbd enabled are vulnerable to this CVE.
