What it actually does
The flaw is a memory leak in the ksmbd kernel module's handling of SMB2_READ commands, where allocated memory is not freed after its lifetime, enabling resource exhaustion.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers can remotely crash or degrade performance of Linux file servers that have the ksmbd SMB service enabled, causing unplanned downtime for file sharing and related services.
How an attack unfolds
An unauthenticated attacker sends a sequence of specially crafted SMB2_READ requests to a system running the ksmbd kernel module; the requests trigger repeated memory allocations that are never released, eventually exhausting kernel memory and producing a denial-of-service condition.
How to fix it
Apply the vendor-supplied kernel update that corrects the memory-release logic in ksmbd; if immediate patching is not possible, disable the ksmbd module or block inbound SMB traffic until the fix can be deployed.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed kernel contains the corrected ksmbd code by checking the package version against the fixed release; re-test SMB2_READ handling with a memory-leak detection tool or by monitoring kernel memory usage under load.
Typical attack path
- Identify Linux hosts exposing TCP port 445 with ksmbd enabled
- Establish an unauthenticated SMB connection
- Transmit repeated SMB2_READ commands with parameters that cause memory allocations without subsequent release
- Continue until kernel memory is exhausted and the system becomes unresponsive or crashes
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for repeated ksmbd memory-allocation warnings or OOM killer events correlated with inbound SMB traffic; examine network captures for anomalous volumes of SMB2_READ commands from single sources.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching all systems that expose ksmbd on the network
- Temporarily disable ksmbd or restrict SMB access via firewall rules until patches are applied
- Add ksmbd version checks to vulnerability scanning and asset inventory processes
The record
A flaw was found within the handling of SMB2_READ commands in the kernel ksmbd module. The issue results from not releasing memory after its effective lifetime. An attacker can leverage this to create a denial-of-service condition on affected installations of Linux. Authentication is not required to exploit this vulnerability, but only systems with ksmbd enabled are vulnerable.
