What it actually does
The flaw permits reading past the end of an allocated buffer when processing SMB2 read requests in the ksmbd kernel module due to missing validation of user-supplied data, enabling disclosure of kernel memory contents on Linux systems.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers may obtain sensitive information from kernel memory on Linux servers running the ksmbd module, increasing risk of data exposure on affected systems with network file sharing enabled.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker connects to a Linux system with ksmbd enabled and sends specially crafted SMB2 read requests that bypass input validation, causing the kernel to return data from beyond the intended buffer and thereby leaking sensitive memory contents.
How to fix it
Disable the ksmbd module when not required; otherwise apply the appropriate kernel or package updates that address the buffer handling issue in SMB2 processing.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm ksmbd is disabled or that the running kernel contains the corrected buffer validation logic; test by attempting SMB2 read operations and verifying no excess data is returned.
Typical attack path
- Scan for Linux hosts exposing SMB services via ksmbd
- Establish an SMB2 session and send malformed read requests
- Capture out-of-bounds memory contents returned in responses
- Analyze leaked data for credentials or other sensitive information
How to detect it
Inspect ksmbd and SMB-related kernel logs for anomalous read request patterns or buffer handling warnings; correlate with unusual SMB2 traffic volumes or sizes.
What your security team should do
- Disable ksmbd on systems where SMB sharing is unnecessary
- Apply kernel updates addressing the SMB2 read request handling
- Review network exposure of SMB ports and restrict access
- Monitor for any future exploit maturity signals given the current low EPSS
The record
A flaw was found within the handling of SMB2 read requests in the kernel ksmbd module. The issue results from the lack of proper validation of user-supplied data, which can result in a read past the end of an allocated buffer. An attacker can leverage this to disclose sensitive information on affected installations of Linux. Only systems with ksmbd enabled are vulnerable to this CVE.
