What it actually does
Memory safety bugs resulting in memory corruption that can be leveraged to execute arbitrary code.
Why it matters to the business
Remote attackers could gain full control of systems running vulnerable mxml packages, leading to data breaches, service disruption, or malware deployment; the vulnerability has been public for over eight years with no observed exploitation.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker supplies specially crafted input to trigger one of the memory corruption conditions in the library, causing the process to execute attacker-controlled code without requiring authentication or user interaction.
How to fix it
Upgrade mxml to version 2.12-2 or later on all affected Debian 10/11/12/13 and Ubuntu 20.04 LTS systems; rebuild and redeploy any dependent applications after the library update.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify installed package versions match or exceed the listed fixed releases; recompile applications against the updated library and confirm no older mxml shared objects remain in library search paths.
Typical attack path
- Identify a network-accessible service or application that links against a vulnerable mxml library
- Craft and send malicious input that exercises the flawed code paths
- Trigger memory corruption to achieve arbitrary code execution within the target process
- Establish persistence or exfiltrate data from the compromised system
How to detect it
Examine application and system logs for crashes or segmentation faults in processes linked to mxml; review file integrity monitoring for unexpected changes to mxml shared libraries; no specific post-exploitation artifacts are documented for this issue.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching all listed mxml packages within the next maintenance window
- Scan build pipelines and container images for the vulnerable library versions
- Add mxml version checks to continuous vulnerability scanning processes
- Review and restrict network exposure of any services that parse untrusted mxml data
The record
Memory safety bugs were reported in Firefox 49. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort that some of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 50.
