Next patch cycle SSVC: Track

Older versions of a popular web browser and email program contain flaws that could let an attacker take over a user's computer simply by getting the user to visit a website or open a message.

What it actually does

Multiple memory safety issues in the browser and email client engine allow memory corruption that can be leveraged for arbitrary code execution with no user interaction required beyond visiting a malicious page or opening a message.

Why it matters to the business

Unpatched systems remain exposed to remote code execution years after disclosure; organizations still running legacy deployments face ongoing risk of full compromise, data theft, and malware deployment even though the flaw is not currently tracked in active campaigns.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker hosts or sends content that triggers one of the memory-safety bugs; with sufficient effort the corruption is turned into a reliable write-what-where primitive, allowing shellcode or a ROP chain to execute attacker-controlled instructions inside the process.

How to fix it

Upgrade Mozilla Firefox to version 57 or later, Firefox ESR to 52.5 or later, and Thunderbird to 52.5 or later. Remove or isolate any remaining instances of the affected releases.

How to confirm the fix worked

Inventory installed versions of Firefox, Firefox ESR, and Thunderbird across the environment and confirm none are older than the fixed releases listed above.

Typical attack path

  1. Deliver malicious HTML or email to the victim
  2. Trigger memory corruption via crafted input
  3. Escalate to arbitrary code execution
  4. Install persistence or exfiltrate data

How to detect it

Review browser and email-client crash logs for patterns consistent with memory corruption; correlate with network logs for unexpected outbound connections shortly after rendering untrusted content.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately block or replace any remaining Firefox < 57, ESR < 52.5, or Thunderbird < 52.5 instances
  • Add version checks to patch-management and vulnerability-scanning policies
  • Monitor EPSS and KEV feeds for any future resurgence of exploitation

The record

Memory safety bugs were reported in Firefox 56 and Firefox ESR 52.4. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort that some of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 57, Firefox ESR < 52.5, and Thunderbird < 52.5.
