What it actually does
Multiple memory safety issues in the browser engine allow memory corruption that can be leveraged for arbitrary code execution when processing specially crafted web content.
Why it matters to the business
Remote attackers can gain full control of user systems running outdated browser versions, enabling data theft, malware deployment, or further network compromise; high ecosystem prevalence in older Linux distributions and Mozilla products increases exposure for organizations still running unpatched instances.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker hosts or injects malicious web content that triggers one of the memory corruption bugs during rendering or script execution; with sufficient effort the corruption is turned into code execution, allowing the attacker to run arbitrary payloads on the victim's machine.
How to fix it
Upgrade Firefox to version 56 or later, Firefox ESR to 52.4 or later, and Thunderbird to 52.4 or later. Apply all vendor security updates for affected Linux distributions and remove unsupported versions from the environment.
How to confirm the fix worked
Query installed browser versions across endpoints and compare against the fixed releases (Firefox >=56, ESR >=52.4, Thunderbird >=52.4); re-scan after patching to confirm absence of vulnerable binaries.
Typical attack path
- Craft or host a malicious webpage or email attachment that targets the vulnerable browser engine
- Victim visits the page or opens the content in an affected Firefox or Thunderbird version
- Memory corruption is triggered and exploited to achieve arbitrary code execution
- Attacker installs persistence, exfiltrates data, or pivots within the environment
How to detect it
Review web proxy, browser, and email client logs for access to suspicious domains or unexpected crashes in firefox or thunderbird processes; correlate with endpoint telemetry for post-exploitation artifacts such as new executables or unusual outbound connections.
What your security team should do
- Immediately inventory and replace any remaining Firefox <56, ESR <52.4, or Thunderbird <52.4 instances
- Block known malicious domains and enforce browser auto-update policies
- Monitor for any lingering vulnerable processes via endpoint detection tools
The record
Memory safety bugs were reported in Firefox 55 and Firefox ESR 52.3. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort that some of these could be exploited to run arbitrary code. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 56, Firefox ESR < 52.4, and Thunderbird < 52.4.
