What it actually does
The vulnerability is a use-after-free condition in the Fetch API implementation that occurs when a worker or window object is deallocated while still referenced, allowing memory corruption that can lead to arbitrary code execution.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers can potentially execute arbitrary code on systems running vulnerable browsers, enabling data theft, malware installation, or full system takeover with low current exploit probability and no known ransomware campaigns.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker hosts a malicious webpage that leverages the Fetch API within a web worker context. Upon loading in an affected browser, carefully timed deallocation and reuse of window or worker objects triggers the use-after-free, resulting in a crash that an attacker can weaponize for remote code execution.
How to fix it
Upgrade Mozilla Firefox to version 56 or later, Firefox ESR to 52.4 or later, and Thunderbird to 52.4 or later. Apply security updates from Linux distribution package maintainers for affected systems such as Debian and Red Hat Enterprise Linux variants.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm installed browser versions meet or exceed the fixed releases listed above. Test Fetch API usage in workers on updated browsers to verify absence of crashes under controlled conditions.
Typical attack path
- Host or compromise a website to serve malicious content
- Lure users to the page via phishing or malvertising
- Trigger Fetch API operations in a worker or window that gets freed prematurely
- Exploit resulting memory corruption to achieve code execution
How to detect it
Examine browser crash reports and memory dumps for references to Fetch API and worker deallocation events. Review web proxy or server logs for unusual patterns of cross-origin fetch requests from internal clients, though post-exploitation artifacts are limited without memory forensics.
What your security team should do
- Immediately update all Firefox, Firefox ESR, and Thunderbird installations across the environment
- Enable automatic browser updates to prevent future exposure
- Restrict execution of untrusted web content where possible using application allowlisting or sandboxing
The record
A use-after-free vulnerability can occur in the Fetch API when the worker or the associated window are freed when still in use, resulting in a potentially exploitable crash. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 56, Firefox ESR < 52.4, and Thunderbird < 52.4.
