What it actually does
Out-of-bounds read occurs when applying style rules to pseudo-elements such as ::first-line using cached style data, enabling potential memory disclosure or application crash in affected rendering engines.
Why it matters to the business
Attackers may extract sensitive information from process memory or cause denial of service, leading to data exposure risks and operational disruption for users of impacted browser and email client versions.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker creates content containing crafted CSS pseudo-element rules that trigger use of stale cached style data, causing the application to read beyond allocated buffers during rendering; this can be delivered via malicious web pages or email messages.
How to fix it
Upgrade affected products to fixed versions: Thunderbird 52.3 or later, Firefox ESR 52.3 or later, Firefox 55 or later. Apply updates immediately given public exploit availability.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm product versions meet or exceed the fixed releases listed above and test rendering of sample pseudo-element CSS to ensure no crash or anomalous behavior occurs.
Typical attack path
- Craft malicious content using CSS pseudo-elements like ::first-line
- Host or deliver content via web page or email
- Induce rendering engine to apply cached style rules
- Trigger out-of-bounds memory read for disclosure or crash
How to detect it
Review browser and email client crash logs for style-related rendering failures, inspect network logs for delivery of suspicious CSS-heavy content, and correlate with known exploit patterns in web or email traffic.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize patching all instances of Firefox, Firefox ESR, and Thunderbird to the specified fixed versions
- Monitor for new exploit code and update detection rules accordingly
- Restrict rendering of untrusted CSS content where possible until patched
The record
An out-of-bounds read occurs when applying style rules to pseudo-elements, such as ::first-line, using cached style data. This vulnerability affects Thunderbird < 52.3, Firefox ESR < 52.3, and Firefox < 55.
