What it actually does

Heap-based buffer overflow in H5VM_array_fill called from H5S_select_elements allowing memory corruption via crafted element selection input.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers may achieve remote code execution or cause crashes on systems processing untrusted data with the affected library, risking data exposure or downtime; low urgency given stable low EPSS and absence from KEV.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker supplies a maliciously crafted input file or data stream that triggers oversized element selection, overflowing the heap buffer in the array fill routine to corrupt memory and potentially execute arbitrary code.

How to fix it

Upgrade affected chromium packages on Debian 11 to version 114.0.5735.133-1~deb11u1 or later; rebuild or replace any custom builds using HDF5 1.14.3 or earlier with patched library versions.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm installed package versions match or exceed the listed fixed releases and run regression tests exercising HDF5 element selection paths.

Typical attack path

  1. Locate services or applications using the vulnerable HDF5 library version
  2. Prepare a specially crafted input that exercises H5S_select_elements with excessive elements
  3. Deliver the input to trigger H5VM_array_fill overflow
  4. Leverage heap corruption for code execution or denial of service

How to detect it

Review application and system logs for segmentation faults or heap-related errors during HDF5 file or data processing; inspect for unexpected process crashes tied to element selection routines.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching chromium on Debian 11 systems to the specified fixed version
  • Inventory all uses of HDF5 library across the environment
  • Monitor EPSS and KEV updates for any increase in exploitation activity

The record

HDF5 Library through 1.14.3 contains a heap-based buffer overflow in H5VM_array_fill in H5VM.c (called from H5S_select_elements in H5Spoint.c).
