What it actually does

Heap-based buffer over-read in H5HL__fl_deserialize within H5HLcache.c corrupts the instruction pointer during deserialization of HDF5 files.

Why it matters to the business

Systems processing HDF5 scientific or data files may experience application crashes or potential remote code execution when handling untrusted inputs, disrupting data analysis workflows and research pipelines that depend on this library.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker supplies a specially crafted HDF5 file containing malformed heap data; when the library deserializes it via H5HL__fl_deserialize, the over-read occurs and corrupts the instruction pointer, potentially allowing control-flow hijacking on the local system.

How to fix it

Upgrade hdfgroup/hdf5 to the commit 88429b015e29c59de604b0f552001fb7cb7ed5d0 or later; rebuild and redeploy all dependent applications after the update.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify the installed library version or commit hash matches or exceeds 88429b015e29c59de604b0f552001fb7cb7ed5d0; run regression tests with malformed HDF5 inputs and confirm absence of crashes or memory errors using sanitizers.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify or create a target application that uses the vulnerable HDF5 library to open files
  2. Craft a malicious HDF5 file that triggers the buffer over-read in H5HLcache.c
  3. Cause the victim process to open the file locally
  4. Trigger instruction pointer corruption to achieve crash or code execution

How to detect it

Monitor process crashes or segmentation faults in applications linked to HDF5 when opening files; review system logs and core dumps for signs of memory corruption during H5HL deserialization.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching all HDF5 installations to the fixed commit within standard change windows
  • Inventory applications and pipelines that link against HDF5 and schedule updates
  • Implement file-type sandboxing or validation for untrusted HDF5 inputs until patches are applied

The record

HDF5 Library through 1.14.3 contains a heap-based buffer over-read in H5HL__fl_deserialize in H5HLcache.c, resulting in the corruption of the instruction pointer, a different vulnerability than CVE-2024-32613.
