What it actually does

Malformed PDF containing circular references in attachment objects triggers unbounded recursion during parsing, exhausting the call stack and terminating the process.

Why it matters to the business

Applications or services that process untrusted PDFs can be forced offline by a single file, causing service disruption and potential loss of availability for dependent workloads.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker supplies a specially crafted PDF that embeds attachment objects forming a loop; when the parser follows these references it recurses until the stack overflows, crashing the process.

How to fix it

Upgrade to a fixed version: qemu on Debian 11/12/13 to 1:5.2+dfsg-3 or later; qemu GIT to commit 553032db17440f8de011390e5a1cfddd13751b0b or later. Apply vendor updates promptly.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed package version matches or exceeds the listed fixed releases; re-test with known trigger PDFs to verify the recursion limit or crash no longer occurs.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify a target application or service that parses PDF files using the vulnerable code
  2. Generate or obtain a PDF containing circular attachment object references
  3. Deliver the PDF to the target via any accepted input channel
  4. Trigger parsing of the attachment structures to induce the stack overflow crash

How to detect it

Review application or system logs for unexpected crashes or stack overflow errors during PDF processing; correlate with file ingestion timestamps to identify suspicious PDFs.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching all listed qemu packages to the stated fixed versions
  • Restrict PDF processing to trusted sources until patches are deployed
  • Monitor for availability alerts on services that handle PDFs

The record

In Xpdf 4.05 (and earlier), a PDF object loop in the attachments leads to infinite recursion and a stack overflow.
