What it actually does

A crafted PDF with circular object references in its resources section triggers unbounded recursion during resource parsing, exhausting the call stack and terminating the process.

Why it matters to the business

Document viewers and any downstream workflows that rely on Xpdf become unavailable when a malicious file is processed, forcing manual intervention or fallback tools until the application is restarted.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker creates a minimal PDF containing a self-referential resource dictionary, then causes the victim to open the file with a vulnerable Xpdf binary; the parser enters infinite recursion on resource resolution and the process terminates.

How to fix it

Upgrade to the first Xpdf release after 4.05 that resolves resource-loop handling; if no newer package is yet available, replace Xpdf with an alternative PDF viewer until an update is released.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed Xpdf version is newer than 4.05, then attempt to open a test PDF containing a resource object cycle and verify the application remains stable.

Typical attack path

  1. Generate a PDF containing a resource object loop
  2. Deliver the file via email, download link, or shared storage
  3. Victim opens the file using Xpdf or an application embedding it
  4. Parser recurses until stack exhaustion occurs
  5. Xpdf process terminates with a segmentation fault or similar crash

How to detect it

Review system and application logs for abrupt Xpdf terminations immediately after PDF file access; correlate crash dumps or segfault entries with recent file-open events involving untrusted PDFs.

What your security team should do

  • Inventory all systems using Xpdf and prioritize upgrade to the latest available version
  • Temporarily disable or replace Xpdf in automated PDF-processing pipelines until patched
  • Add Xpdf crash signatures to endpoint monitoring for rapid detection of attempted exploitation

The record

In Xpdf 4.05 (and earlier), a PDF object loop in the PDF resources leads to infinite recursion and a stack overflow.
