What it actually does
Out-of-bounds array write triggered by an invalid character code in a Type 1 font, caused by a bounds check that modern compilers optimize away.
Why it matters to the business
Limited local denial of service on systems processing untrusted documents with the vulnerable parser; low urgency given no known exploitation or ransomware use and minimal EPSS.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts a malicious document containing a Type 1 font with an invalid character code that bypasses the optimized-away bounds check, causing memory corruption when the document is processed locally.
How to fix it
Upgrade parse-community/parse-server to the commit 9d502269c50320cb8b677f37f9ac3735d7a53481 or later; rebuild any downstream packages that embed the vulnerable parser.
How to confirm the fix worked
Confirm the installed version is at or above the fixed commit; test parsing of sample documents containing Type 1 fonts with invalid character codes for absence of crashes or memory errors.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local access or ability to supply a document to the vulnerable parser
- Craft a Type 1 font with an invalid character code that defeats the bounds check
- Trigger processing of the document to induce the out-of-bounds write
- Achieve limited denial-of-service impact
How to detect it
Review application or system logs for unexpected crashes or segmentation faults during document parsing; search process execution history for invocations of the parser on untrusted files.
What your security team should do
- Apply the listed fixed commit to all parse-community/parse-server deployments within normal change windows
- Monitor EPSS and KEV status for any future increase in exploit maturity
- Include the vulnerable parser in routine software bill-of-materials reviews
The record
Out-of-bounds array write in Xpdf 4.05 and earlier, triggered by an invalid character code in a Type 1 font. The root problem was a bounds check that was being optimized away by modern compilers.
