What it actually does

Heap-based buffer overflow in the get_ne64 function of bele.h triggered by malformed input, enabling memory corruption and potential arbitrary code execution or denial of service.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers may gain control of systems that process untrusted packed executables or cause application crashes, disrupting operations and increasing risk of compromise in build, distribution, or security analysis pipelines.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a malicious file that manipulates the get_ne64 function to overflow a heap buffer; the file is delivered to a target that invokes UPX processing, triggering the overflow and allowing code execution or crash.

How to fix it

Upgrade UPX to a version newer than 4.2.2 once a fix is released by the project; in the interim, avoid processing untrusted files with UPX and consider alternative unpackers with sandboxing.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed UPX binary version is newer than 4.2.2; test by attempting to process known-good and boundary-case packed files and monitor for crashes or unexpected behavior in the get_ne64 path.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify targets that use UPX to unpack or analyze executables
  2. Craft a specially formed input file exploiting the bele.h buffer handling flaw
  3. Deliver the malicious file via download, email, or shared storage
  4. Trigger processing of the file with the vulnerable UPX binary
  5. Achieve memory corruption leading to code execution or service disruption

How to detect it

Review process execution logs and crash reports for UPX binaries encountering malformed inputs; look for segmentation faults or heap-related errors during file unpacking operations on suspicious files.

What your security team should do

  • Inventory all systems and pipelines that invoke UPX and prioritize upgrade once a patched release is available
  • Implement strict input validation and sandboxing around any UPX usage
  • Monitor vulnerability disclosures for UPX updates and test in isolated environments
  • Restrict UPX execution to trusted file sources only

The record

A vulnerability was found in UPX up to 4.2.2. It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function get_ne64 of the file bele.h. The manipulation leads to heap-based buffer overflow. The exploit has been disclosed to the public and may be used. The associated identifier of this vulnerability is VDB-259055. NOTE: The vendor was contacted early about this disclosure but did not respond in any way.
