What it actually does

Stack buffer underflow in dict_foreach_keyvalue at swftools/lib/q.c allows memory corruption that can lead to arbitrary code execution when processing crafted input.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can gain full control of systems running vulnerable swftools when users process malicious files, resulting in data theft, ransomware deployment, or lateral movement; the issue affects Debian 11 environments and has publicly available exploits.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker supplies a specially crafted SWF file that triggers the stack buffer underflow during dictionary iteration in dict_foreach_keyvalue; because an exploit is publicly available and the flaw requires only local access with user interaction, a victim opening the file with affected swftools binaries executes attacker-controlled code.

How to fix it

Upgrade swftools packages on Debian 11 to a version containing the fix present in linux kernel package 5.10.221-1 or later; rebuild or replace any custom builds with patched sources; avoid processing untrusted SWF files until updated.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed swftools binary reports a version after the fix or verify the underlying Debian 11 package is at least linux 5.10.221-1; test that the dict_foreach_keyvalue function no longer underflows on known trigger inputs.

Typical attack path

  1. Attacker crafts malicious SWF file exploiting the underflow in dict_foreach_keyvalue
  2. Victim opens or processes the file using vulnerable swftools on Debian 11
  3. Underflow corrupts stack memory and diverts control flow
  4. Attacker payload executes with the privileges of the swftools process

How to detect it

Review process execution logs and file-access telemetry for invocations of swftools binaries on untrusted SWF inputs; look for crashes or segmentation faults in q.c related functions around the time of file processing.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately update all Debian 11 systems to linux package 5.10.221-1 or equivalent patched swftools build
  • Block or sandbox processing of untrusted SWF files with swftools until patches are applied
  • Monitor for new exploit releases given the ExploitAvailable maturity status
  • Remove or restrict swftools from user-accessible paths if the tool is not required

The record

swftools 0.9.2 was discovered to contain a Stack Buffer Underflow via the function dict_foreach_keyvalue at swftools/lib/q.c.
