What it actually does
The flaw triggers a segmentation violation (crash) inside the free_lines function in swfshape.c due to invalid memory access when processing malformed SWF input.
Why it matters to the business
Tools built on swftools may terminate unexpectedly when given certain input files, interrupting any workflow that converts or inspects SWF content.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker supplies a specially crafted SWF file that reaches the free_lines routine with corrupted internal structures; when swftools processes the file the application crashes.
How to fix it
Upgrade swftools to a version that corrects the free_lines handling; until a fix is released, avoid processing untrusted SWF files or run the tools inside a sandbox.
How to confirm the fix worked
Reproduce the crash with the original proof-of-concept file before the update, then confirm the same file no longer causes a segmentation violation after the update.
Typical attack path
- Create SWF file that exercises the faulty code path in free_lines
- Deliver the file to a system running the vulnerable swftools binary
- Victim or automated process opens or converts the file
- Application dereferences invalid memory and terminates
How to detect it
Inspect process logs, core dumps, or crash reports for segmentation faults originating from swftools and the free_lines symbol; correlate with recent SWF file ingestion events.
What your security team should do
- Track upstream swftools releases for a corrective patch
- Restrict swftools usage to trusted input only
- Wrap the tools in a sandbox or container with limited privileges
- Log application crashes that reference swfshape.c for later review
