What it actually does
The vulnerability triggers a segmentation violation (crash) inside compileSWFActionCode when the tool parses a specially crafted SWF file containing malformed ActionScript bytecode.
Why it matters to the business
Processing untrusted SWF files with the affected version can cause the application to terminate unexpectedly, interrupting automated media conversion or analysis pipelines that depend on swftools.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker crafts a malicious SWF file that reaches compileSWFActionCode with invalid bytecode structures; when the local user or automated process invokes the tool on that file, the function dereferences invalid memory and the process crashes.
How to fix it
Upgrade to a version of swftools that resolves the crash in compileSWFActionCode; if no newer release exists, replace swftools with an alternative SWF processing library or sandbox all invocations of the tool.
How to confirm the fix worked
Re-run the tool against a corpus of known-good and previously crashing SWF samples after the upgrade; confirm the process no longer aborts with SIGSEGV when the trigger file is supplied.
Typical attack path
- Attacker generates a malformed SWF file targeting the action compiler
- Victim or automated workflow executes swftools on the file (swfcompile, swfextract, etc.)
- compileSWFActionCode processes the bytecode and triggers the segmentation violation
- Process terminates, resulting in denial of service
How to detect it
Search application and system logs for repeated abrupt terminations of swftools binaries (swfcompile, swfextract, swfrender) when processing SWF input; correlate with file-creation events for SWF files from untrusted sources.
What your security team should do
- Inventory all systems and build pipelines that invoke swftools and restrict them to trusted input only
- Apply any available upstream patch or migrate to a maintained alternative
- Add SWF file handling to the organization's untrusted-file sandbox policy
- Monitor for new releases or community forks that address the crash
