What it actually does
A strcpy call with overlapping source and destination buffers in swfc triggers undefined behavior, resulting in memory corruption within the swftools processing pipeline.
Why it matters to the business
Processing untrusted SWF files can cause application crashes or unpredictable behavior, potentially disrupting workflows that rely on swftools for conversion or analysis.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker supplies a specially crafted SWF input that reaches the vulnerable strcpy site; the overlapping parameters corrupt adjacent memory, which may be leveraged for denial of service or, with additional effort, arbitrary code execution.
How to fix it
Upgrade to a patched version of swftools once available; in the interim, avoid processing untrusted SWF files with swfc and consider replacing the tool with a maintained alternative.
How to confirm the fix worked
Rebuild swftools with address sanitizer or similar instrumentation and confirm the strcpy site no longer receives overlapping arguments on test inputs; verify absence of the vulnerable binary in production paths.
Typical attack path
- Identify a system or workflow that invokes swfc on untrusted SWF files
- Craft an SWF file containing data that forces source and destination overlap in the strcpy call
- Deliver the file to the target process
- Trigger processing to induce memory corruption
How to detect it
Review process crash logs and core dumps for swfc or swftools binaries; look for segmentation faults or memory errors immediately after SWF processing.
What your security team should do
- Inventory all uses of swftools and remove or isolate the component where feasible
- Implement strict input validation or sandboxing around any remaining swfc invocations
- Monitor for new upstream releases and apply fixes promptly
