What it actually does

A crafted SELECT statement invoking the box_div function triggers a denial of service condition that crashes or hangs the database server process.

Why it matters to the business

Database services become unavailable, disrupting applications and queries that depend on the Virtuoso instance and causing operational downtime.

How an attack unfolds

An unauthenticated remote attacker connects to an exposed Virtuoso instance and issues a malicious SELECT statement that reaches the vulnerable box_div function, causing the server to terminate or enter a non-responsive state.

How to fix it

Upgrade to the latest available build of Virtuoso once a fix is released; in the interim restrict network access to the SQL port, enforce authentication, and apply network-level query filtering or WAF rules where feasible.

How to confirm the fix worked

Attempt reproduction of the original SELECT statement in an isolated test instance before and after any upgrade or mitigation; confirm the server remains responsive and does not terminate.

Typical attack path

  1. Locate an internet-facing or internally reachable Virtuoso server
  2. Establish a connection using the SQL endpoint without authentication
  3. Submit a SELECT statement containing input that exercises the box_div function
  4. Observe server crash or resource exhaustion resulting in denial of service

How to detect it

Review database access logs and network traffic for unexpected SELECT statements arriving from untrusted sources; look for repeated queries that coincide with server restarts or high CPU usage in the virtuoso process.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately restrict network exposure of Virtuoso SQL ports to trusted clients only
  • Enable or enforce authentication on all database endpoints
  • Monitor for new fixed releases from the vendor and schedule upgrade testing
  • Add the instance to vulnerability scanning and patch management workflows

The record

An issue in the box_div function in openlink virtuoso-opensource v7.2.11 allows attackers to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) after running a SELECT statement.
