What it actually does

Crafted SQL statements trigger a denial of service condition inside the sql_tree_hash_1 component, causing the database server to crash or become unresponsive.

Why it matters to the business

Service availability is lost until the affected database instance is restarted, interrupting dependent applications and data access for users and downstream systems.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with network access to a listening SQL endpoint submits a sequence of specially formed SQL statements that reach the sql_tree_hash_1 function and force the server process into a fatal state.

How to fix it

Upgrade flashplugin-nonfree on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS to version 11.2.202.632ubuntu0.14.04.1 or later; apply the equivalent patch for openlink virtuoso-opensource once released.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the installed package version matches or exceeds the listed fixed release and test that the crafted SQL statements no longer produce a crash.

Typical attack path

  1. Locate an exposed Virtuoso or affected SQL service
  2. Craft a malicious SQL payload targeting sql_tree_hash_1
  3. Transmit the payload over a normal SQL connection
  4. Observe server crash or sustained unresponsiveness

How to detect it

Review database error logs and process crash dumps for abrupt terminations immediately following SQL statement execution; correlate with connection logs showing unusual query patterns.

What your security team should do

  • Apply the listed package update on all Ubuntu 14.04 systems running flashplugin-nonfree
  • Restrict direct SQL access from untrusted networks until patches are deployed
  • Monitor for unexpected database process terminations

The record

An issue in the sql_tree_hash_1 component of openlink virtuoso-opensource v7.2.11 allows attackers to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) via crafted SQL statements.
