What it actually does

The flaw in the cha_cmp function allows a remote unauthenticated attacker to submit a crafted SELECT statement that triggers a crash or resource exhaustion in the database server.

Why it matters to the business

Database services become unavailable, causing application downtime, interrupted queries, and potential loss of access to data-dependent operations until the server is restarted.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker connects to an exposed Virtuoso instance and issues a malicious SELECT statement that reaches the vulnerable cha_cmp function, resulting in denial of service; public exploit code is available but no named threat actors have been observed using it.

How to fix it

Upgrade to the latest available Virtuoso build once a fix is released; in the interim restrict network access to the database port, disable unnecessary query interfaces, and apply query allow-listing or input validation at the application layer.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm the running version is newer than 7.2.11, re-test the instance with known-triggering SELECT statements in a non-production environment, and monitor for absence of crashes under load.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify an internet-facing or internally reachable Virtuoso instance
  2. Establish a connection without authentication
  3. Submit a crafted SELECT statement targeting the cha_cmp function
  4. Observe server crash or unresponsiveness confirming the denial of service

How to detect it

Review database error logs and process crash dumps for entries referencing the cha_cmp function or abrupt termination following SELECT operations; correlate with network logs showing unexpected query traffic from untrusted sources.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately restrict network exposure of Virtuoso instances
  • Monitor vendor announcements for an official patched release
  • Implement network-level controls to limit query submission sources
  • Add alerting on unexpected database process restarts

The record

An issue in the cha_cmp function of openlink virtuoso-opensource v7.2.11 allows attackers to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) after running a SELECT statement.
