What it actually does

A stack-based buffer overflow in the SQL statement parser of Virtuoso allows remote unauthenticated attackers to overwrite the call stack with crafted input, crashing the server process and causing denial of service.

Why it matters to the business

Prolonged or repeated database outages that interrupt dependent applications and services, with ongoing exposure risk given public exploit code available more than three years after disclosure and no listed fixed version.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker connects to an exposed Virtuoso SQL interface and submits a specially constructed query that triggers the stack overflow during parsing; the server process terminates, achieving denial of service. Publicly available exploit code lowers the barrier for repeated attacks.

How to fix it

Apply the latest Virtuoso build from the vendor once released; until then restrict SQL interface access to trusted sources, deploy network-level controls to limit query size or complexity, and monitor vendor channels for security updates.

How to confirm the fix worked

After any update, re-test normal SQL workloads for stability and attempt reproduction of the original crash condition with known malformed queries in an isolated environment; confirm absence of crash logs tied to SQL parsing.

Typical attack path

  1. Locate publicly reachable Virtuoso instances via network scanning
  2. Establish a SQL connection or submit queries over supported protocols
  3. Transmit a crafted SQL statement engineered to overflow the stack buffer
  4. Observe server crash and service unavailability

How to detect it

Inspect database and system logs for abrupt process terminations during SQL processing, unusual query patterns, or stack-related error messages; correlate with availability alerts showing sudden service loss.

What your security team should do

  • Immediately restrict network exposure of Virtuoso ports to authorized clients only
  • Implement query length and complexity limits via proxy or firewall rules
  • Monitor vendor release notes and apply patches as soon as a fixed version becomes available
  • Add crash and availability monitoring for Virtuoso processes

The record

A stack overflow in openlink virtuoso-opensource v7.2.11 allows attackers to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) via crafted SQL statements.
