Schedule a fix SSVC: Track

A flaw in the Virtuoso database lets anyone on the network send a special query that can shut the server down, stopping applications from reading or writing data until it is restarted.

What it actually does

The box_add function in Virtuoso allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to trigger a denial of service by crafting a SELECT statement that causes uncontrolled resource consumption or crash.

Why it matters to the business

Successful exploitation can render the database server unavailable, interrupting data access for applications and users until the service is restarted.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker connects to an exposed Virtuoso instance over the network and issues a malicious SELECT query that invokes box_add with crafted parameters, leading to exhaustion of resources or process termination. Public exploit code exists that automates this sequence.

How to fix it

Upgrade to the latest Virtuoso release that resolves the box_add handling issue. If an immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict network access to the SQL port, enforce authentication, and apply input validation or query allow-listing at any proxy layer.

How to confirm the fix worked

After applying updates, re-test with the original proof-of-concept SELECT statement to confirm the server no longer crashes or becomes unresponsive. Monitor process stability under load and verify version numbers against vendor advisories.

Typical attack path

  1. Identify publicly reachable Virtuoso instances via network scanning
  2. Connect using the default or known SQL endpoint without authentication
  3. Submit a SELECT statement engineered to trigger the vulnerable box_add path
  4. Observe service crash or sustained high resource usage confirming DoS

How to detect it

Review database access logs and system process logs for repeated or malformed SELECT statements around the time of service restarts or high CPU/memory events. Correlate with network flow data showing unexpected connections to the SQL port.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching or isolating all Virtuoso instances given the public exploit and high CVSS score
  • Block or strictly control inbound connections to port 1111/tcp and any other SQL listener ports from untrusted networks
  • Implement query logging and anomaly detection for unusual SELECT patterns targeting internal functions
  • Review downstream dependent projects and schedule upgrades to reduce exposure across the ecosystem

The record

An issue in the box_add function in openlink virtuoso-opensource v7.2.11 allows attackers to cause a Denial of Service (DoS) after running a SELECT statement.
