What it actually does
Null pointer dereference in f2fs_write_end_io within the F2FS filesystem write completion path, resulting in kernel panic or denial of service.
Why it matters to the business
Local privileged users can crash affected Linux systems, interrupting services and requiring manual recovery; widespread impact on servers and devices using the F2FS filesystem.
How an attack unfolds
An attacker with local privileges supplies crafted input that reaches the F2FS write end IO handler under race conditions, triggering the null pointer dereference and forcing a kernel crash.
How to fix it
Update the Linux kernel to a version containing the fix for the null pointer dereference in fs/f2fs/data.c; apply vendor-supplied patches for Debian and NetApp products; reboot after installation.
How to confirm the fix worked
Verify the running kernel version against vendor advisories; inspect fs/f2fs/data.c for the presence of null checks in f2fs_write_end_io after patching; test F2FS write workloads for stability.
Typical attack path
- Obtain local shell access on a target system running an affected Linux kernel with F2FS enabled
- Prepare and execute a program that triggers concurrent write operations on an F2FS filesystem
- Force the kernel into the vulnerable f2fs_write_end_io code path
- Cause the null pointer dereference resulting in system crash
How to detect it
Review kernel logs for oops or panic entries referencing f2fs_write_end_io or fs/f2fs/data.c; correlate with F2FS mount and write activity around crash times.
What your security team should do
- Prioritize kernel updates on all systems using F2FS, especially production servers and NetApp appliances
- Restrict local privileged access where possible until patches are applied
- Monitor for unusual kernel panics on F2FS volumes
- Review and test F2FS usage in environments before re-enabling after patching
The record
There is a null-pointer-dereference flaw found in f2fs_write_end_io in fs/f2fs/data.c in the Linux kernel. This flaw allows a local privileged user to cause a denial of service problem.
