What it actually does

Heap buffer overflow in swf_GetPlaceObject allows out-of-bounds memory writes when processing a malicious SWF file, leading to process crash or memory corruption.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers can crash media-processing applications on affected systems, causing denial of service and potential operational disruption until systems are updated.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a malicious SWF file that triggers the overflow during parsing in swf_GetPlaceObject; the file is opened locally via swfdump or an affected web rendering component, resulting in memory corruption that can be leveraged for denial of service.

How to fix it

Upgrade webkit2gtk to 2.40.1-1~deb11u1 or later on Debian 11, 2.40.1-1 on Debian 12/13; upgrade wpewebkit to 2.38.6-1 on Debian 12/13. Apply patches immediately given public exploit availability.

How to confirm the fix worked

Verify installed package versions match or exceed the listed fixed releases; test with known-good and known-bad SWF samples to confirm the overflow no longer occurs.

Typical attack path

  1. Craft malicious SWF file to overflow the heap buffer
  2. Deliver file to target via email, web download, or local access
  3. Victim opens the file with swfdump or affected webkit component
  4. Overflow occurs during swf_GetPlaceObject processing
  5. Application crashes or memory state is corrupted

How to detect it

Review application crash logs and core dumps for signs of heap corruption during SWF processing; inspect file-handling processes for unexpected termination after opening SWF content.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching of all listed Debian packages within the next 30 days
  • Disable or sandbox local SWF processing tools until updates are applied
  • Monitor for new exploit code and update detection rules accordingly

The record
