What it actually does

The vulnerability is a stack-use-after-scope condition in the swf_ReadSWF2 function within lib/rfxswf.c of SWFTools 0.9.2 that allows an attacker to reference stack memory after its scope has ended, enabling memory corruption that can lead to arbitrary code execution or denial of service.

Why it matters to the business

Organizations using Debian 11 systems that process SWF files with SWFTools face elevated risk of local system compromise; the long-published nature and available exploit increase urgency for remediation despite low EPSS.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker crafts a malicious SWF file that triggers the stack-use-after-scope when processed by swf_ReadSWF2; the victim must be tricked into opening the file locally on an affected Debian system, after which memory corruption allows code execution in the context of the user running the tool.

How to fix it

Upgrade affected Debian 11 systems to the fixed package version 5.10.178-1 or later; remove or isolate SWFTools 0.9.2 binaries until patched packages are deployed.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm SWFTools version is no longer 0.9.2 and that the installed package reports 5.10.178-1 or newer; test by attempting to process known benign SWF files and verify no crashes occur under expected workloads.

Typical attack path

  1. Craft malicious SWF file exploiting the stack-use-after-scope in swf_ReadSWF2
  2. Deliver the file via email, web download, or shared storage
  3. Victim opens the file with an affected SWFTools binary on Debian 11
  4. Memory corruption occurs leading to code execution or crash

How to detect it

Review local process execution logs and file access records for invocations of swf_ReadSWF2 or SWFTools binaries on unexpected files; look for segmentation faults or abnormal crashes correlated with SWF processing.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching Debian 11 systems to 5.10.178-1 immediately due to public exploit availability
  • Scan package inventories for any remaining SWFTools 0.9.2 installations
  • Restrict execution of SWFTools to trusted users and files only until remediation completes
  • Monitor for new EPSS increases or exploit maturity changes

The record

SWFTools v0.9.2 was discovered to contain a stack-use-after-scope in the swf_ReadSWF2 function in lib/rfxswf.c.
