What it actually does

Use-after-free in btf_dump_name_dups allows memory corruption via crafted BPF type data leading to potential arbitrary code execution or denial of service.

Why it matters to the business

Attackers on the same network segment could gain full control of affected systems or cause widespread outages, increasing risk for organizations running unpatched kernels with BPF tooling.

How an attack unfolds

An attacker with adjacent network access crafts malicious BPF type information that triggers the use-after-free condition during dump operations in libbpf, allowing memory reuse for code execution.

How to fix it

Apply the upstream patch referenced in VDB-211032 and update to a kernel version containing the fix for tools/lib/bpf/btf_dump.c.

How to confirm the fix worked

Confirm kernel and libbpf source no longer contains the vulnerable btf_dump_name_dups implementation and test with BPF dump workloads.

Typical attack path

  1. Gain adjacent network access to target system
  2. Deliver crafted BPF data via local process or network-adjacent channel
  3. Trigger btf_dump_name_dups to induce use-after-free
  4. Reuse freed memory for malicious payload execution

How to detect it

Review system logs and audit records for unusual BPF program loads or crashes involving libbpf functions around the time of suspected activity.

What your security team should do

  • Prioritize patching systems exposing BPF interfaces on internal networks
  • Monitor for new kernel releases containing the btf_dump fix
  • Restrict untrusted access to BPF tooling until updated

The record

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Linux Kernel. Affected is the function btf_dump_name_dups of the file tools/lib/bpf/btf_dump.c of the component libbpf. The manipulation leads to use after free. It is recommended to apply a patch to fix this issue. The identifier of this vulnerability is VDB-211032.
